If you're really good, play as many local gigs as you can - for free, build a following, create a good, professional website where people can hear a snip of your songs (choose your web designer carefully for this, and don't pay the whole amount up-front. Pay on an arranged schedule as the site hits milestones in its development), be all over Myspace and Facebook and Yahoo, etc. It's not absolutely necessary to have a label deal anymore, but it doesn't hurt - but you've got to be good. Try out for some of the newer American Idol type shows. Check the net often for casting call sites. Get to know the DJs ! at your local and regional radio stations - especially the Music Director. And practice, practice, practice. Do not let some self-proclaimed independent record promoter sell you any kind of package that includes a recording session, pressing and distribution to radio, that you have to pay for.
