Why do some movies come out in movie theaters while others don't?

answers1: The company behind the movie decides first. For example
Warner Bros funds a movie, the movie is made, actors paid etc. If the
company watch the finished product and don't like it then it is put
out straight to DVD. However the movie theaters also decide, they pay
for the screening of every movie in every theatre. A film like Harry
Potter, or most romcoms have a large audience, so the movie theatre
know they can make back most of the money and earn profit. Other
movies however are more niche, they appeal to a smaller audience, for
example indie movies, so sometimes they show at just a few theaters,
or the theatre doesn't buy rights for the movie at all, though another
company might.
