answers4: Trouble is you don't want to get something he already
has...or something he doesn't particularly need.

For example a set of ND-grads isn't much use unless he was a serious
landscape photographer.

As I know nothing about your boyfriends photographic skill and areas
of interest, I would say the best thing to buy him is a photobook.
Something covering a the work of an inspiring photographer, if he
likes landscapes, perhaps the classic Ansel Adams, photojournalism
then it's got to be Cartier-Bresson, fashion you can choose from
Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Mario Testino, David Bailey, Rankin
(maybe), just to name a few, surealism - Man Ray. That's quite some
selection already.
answers5: You have two problems. One is that this camera doesn't do
anything close to film or "filming". There's no such thing or term as
regards digital cameras. Terms are important like calling a steering
wheel a tire or a house an apartment - get my drift? Get rid of that
word when talking about digital cameras because they shoot video.
Second, your budget won't even come close to buying a shoulder rig for
shooting video. They're very nice and useful but they're also
expensive... many hundreds of US dollars type of expensive so that's
probably out. Third "really cool" doesn't get to what you're actually
after. Lots of things are really cool but don't do any kind of useful
work toward a goal. If that's all the money you have then I'd suggest
a good camera bag, a nice neck strap or perhaps a better wind screen
for his microphone. Sorry but your budget won't buy much. Photography
as a hobby or profession isn't cheap. If you want to get him a
shoulder rig at least triple your budget and perhaps more.
